WAR GRAVES, RUSSIA.
http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1922/jun/26/war-graves-russia

HC Deb 26 June 1922 vol 155 cc1668-9 1668

§92. Major GLYN asked the Secretary of State for War what action has been taken to mark permanently and organise the care of British soldiers' graves in Russia; whether he is aware that many isolated graves of British soldiers are situated along the banks of the Dwina 1669 and elsewhere, and unless immediate advantage is taken of the present summer conditions, the opportunity to take the necessary action will be lost; and whether he will state what was the total number of men lost in British expeditions to North Russia, and what proportion of these men are buried at base camps at Murmansk and Archangel?
§The SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Sir Laming Worthington-Evans) The Imperial War Graves Commission have records of many isolated groups of graves on the Dwina and in other parts of North Russia, but under present conditions it is not feasible to erect memorials on graves in territories under direct control of the Soviet Government. Memorials have, however, been erected at Vladivostok and are being, or will be, erected in Finland, Esthonia, Latvia, Poland and other countries formerly forming part of the Russian Empire. Arrangements have also been made for the care of graves in different parts of the Caucasus. The number of deaths from all causes during the campaign in North Russia was 384 officers and other ranks. There are 79 graves at Archangel, 35 at Murmansk, and smaller numbers in many other places in those neighbourhoods.

Gornostai, Siberia. War art by Louis Keene, 1919.

Louis Keene (1888-1972) was a listed Canadian professional artist.
In 1912 he was painting in South Africa with his father Caleb Keene (1862-1954), who exhibited pictures in Cape Town between 1902 and 1920 including at one SASA exhibition with artists such as Hugo Naude as early as 1902.
He and his father were painting the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec in 1914 when World War 1 broke out. He enlisted in the Canadian army and became a prolific war artist whose works are now in Canadian museums and are still exhibited today. He painted scenes from the Canadian campaign in Siberia after the Bolshevik revolution. He also wrote a book about his war experiences and again served the Canadian Army in World War 2 where he was a Lieutenant-Colonel in charge of group of Canadian soldiers in England. He continued to exhibit his work, even during World War 2.

Smouldering Russian Army Storehouse Burnt by the Bolsheviks, painting by Colonel Louis Keene.

Canada, Department of External Affairs, Documents on Canadian External Relations, vol. 1 (1909-1918) (Ottawa: Queen's Printer, 1967), 207-209. Bothwell, 27; Stanley, 335; Stacey, 278:

- 255 офицеров;
- 3931 нижний чин и служащий;

...
